To address the issue of overfishing, sustainability and its effect on fishers’ income, this study was conducted in three major landing centres of Greater Mumbai, Sassoon Dock (SSD) and New Ferry Wharf (NFW) located in Mumbai City and Versova located in Mumbai Suburban. Primary data on socio-economics, capital costs, operating costs, returns of mechanized fishing units and prices of different species of fishes were collected. Secondary data on marine fish landings, quarter wise landings, gear wise landings, species-wise landings and total effort of trawlers for Greater Mumbai were collected from 1997–2018. The fishery resources for all the three centres were found to be declining. The current marine fish production was well above the maximum sustainable yield (MSY). Therefore, the current fishing yield was found to be both biologically and economically unsustainable.
