Gujarat accounted for 5.64% area and 9.80% production under pearl millet in India in 2015–16. The average yield of pearl millet in Gujarat is 20.04 qtl/ha, almost double the all-India level of 11.54 qtl/ha. The yield of pearl millet high yielding varieties in kharif season was 11.13 qtl/ha while in summer season it was 24.49 qtl/ha. This shows a notable difference in the yield of kharif pearl millet and summer pearl millet. In the study period (200102 to 2015–16), input growth was higher than output growth; even the resultant TFP growth was negative. Even higher input use was not able to induce an increase in output, which shows that technological interventions are acting as limiting factors in the production system. This may have serious implications on pearl millet production.
