Punjab is facing acute challenges on the agricultural front, such as the sharp depletion of its underground water table, environmental degradation due to straw burning and lack of crop diversification. These problems are attributed mostly to paddy cultivation. To conserve/save precious underground water, agricultural scientists advocate that the state decrease its area under paddy cultivation and adopt short-duration varieties of paddy. To improve its rural economy and agricultural sustainability, Punjab should consider using short-duration varieties of paddy and also use inputs judiciously.
