Abstract

This study examines the structural changes in and competitiveness of India's mango exports. Its main destinations are the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. The Markov chain analysis indicates that the UAE has shown stability in the import of mangoes during the overall period by gaining its share from other countries. The nominal protection coefficient was less than unity. It indicates that mango has a comparative advantage in the international market. Therefore, India can export its surplus production to earn valuable foreign exchange. The UK is a highly competitive market for exports. The export performance ratio was greater than unity for exports during 1990–91 to 2012–13 and 2015–16 to 2016–17, indicating that mango had a high comparative advantage in the international market during the study period. The study suggests that special emphasis be laid on quality production, post-harvest management and the export of mango to export-competitive countries.
