Abstract

The study was conducted to make demand and supply projections for pulses in Assam up to the year 2025. The data on area, production and productivity and other related variables of pulses were collected from different published sources. The study found a shortage for domestic consumption of gram (chickpea), arhar, green gram and lentil during 2025, and also a positive gap for black gram and pea. The study suggests an urgent need to increase the production of pulses. This can be done by improving land productivity by increasing mechanization and the area under irrigation and by bringing more areas into cultivation by sowing new areas and introducing multiple cropping in already cultivated lands.
