Abstract

Based on household data generated through a primary survey in two villages of Wayanad district, this paper reviews the land leasing situation in Kerala. The paper highlights that the district's agrarian crisis has not led to a noticeable decline in the extent of tenancy; the decline that has taken place is due largely to the fragmentation of landholdings and the increased uncertainty in rainfall. Land is leased increasingly for cash and plantain crops while leasing for paddy is going down. Fixed rent in cash is the most practised leasing arrangement, which largely indicates the rise in absentee landlordism in tenancy.
