This paper examines variations in the pattern of the consumption expenditure of rural households in the border districts of Punjab using primary data collected from 360 households. The results show that the highest share of the total food expenditure is spent on beverages, refreshments and processed foods, followed by milk and milk products, vegetables and cereals. As regards non-food expenditure, education accounts for the highest share. Self-employed households earn the highest income, followed by servicemen and farmers, but farmers incur the highest expenditure.
