An attempt is made to study the consumption pattern and food security status of rural households in Cuddalore district using a multi-stage random sampling technique. Based on the number of rural households, Kurinjipadi block was selected and 120 sample households were selected from six villages of the selected block. The sample households were post-stratified into two groups. The specific objectives were analysed using percentage analysis, gap between daily calorie consumption and recommended level and measures of inequality and multiple regression analysis. Group 1 families spent Rs. 64, 000 on food and non-food items annually and Group 2 households spent Rs. 1, 15, 000. The major portion of consumption expenditure was spent on the purchase of food products in both groups. Fifty-six Group 1 families and 28 Group 2 families were nutritionally insecure. The government and NGOs should provide households training on income-generating activities to improve their income, nutrient intake and security status.
