This study evaluates the performance of the predominant farming systems in Tamil Nadu using primary data from 192 farmers for 2015–16, and the standard cost and stochastic frontier production function methods. Seven different predominant farming systems were identified, of which the fruits and turmeric farming systems were profitable. The marginal and small farms were more diversified, whereas the large farms were specialized, with high-value crops. The productivity in all the farming systems can be enhanced up to 40% by adopting technologies such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI), and fertigation.
