Determinants of agricultural labour use in Bihar

Abstract

The study aims at examining the main determinants of human lahour use in Bihar. Intensity of cropping and machine lahour utlization were main detenninants of human lahour utlization in the project area. An increase of 10 per cent each in machine lahour utlization and intensity of cropping would result in the increase in human lahour utilization by 4.81 per cent and 11.43 pa cent, respectively.

The study further revealed that the wage rate, net cultivated area and irrigated area had positive and significant influence on hired human labour utilization, where is percentage area under share cropping and family lahour utilization had negative influence on hired human lahour utilization. An inctease of 10 per cent each in wage rate, net cultivated area mld percentage area under irrigation would increase the hired human labour utilization by 10.80 per cent, 3.28 per cent and 2.27 per cent, respectively on sample households.
