Detailed studies of Hirkud command of Orissa and its one distributary were conducted with respect to climate, topography, cropping pattern, surface and ground water potential, canal schedule, quality of ground water, methods of irrigation etc. It is observed that the command requires crop diversification from nee to non-rice crops for efficient utilization of canal water The carrying capacity of the canal has also to be improved besides providing field channels for equal distribution of water.
