Now a days, practically all the medium and high horse power tractors and other heavy duty vehicles are powered by C. I. engines using diesel fuel. Main user of diesel fuel in India is the Agril. Sector, next to Transport Sectors The demand for the diesel have outstripped it's availability resulting in great scarcity. It has, therefore, become imperative that vigrous efforts should be made to conserve and stretch the available reserve of the petroleum fuel. It is therefore essential to find out alternative fuels which may fully or partially replace diesel as C.I. engine fuel in future.
Soyabean, sunflower, rape seed and Neem oil blended in varying proportions with diesel, have been tried to run a single cylinder 5hp Kirloskar diesel engine to evaluate the suitability and engine performance. In the present paper, the results of experimental investigations carried out to study the performance characteristics of rape seed oil blended with diesel upto 30% have been reported. Results revealed that rape seed oil blended upto 30% in diesel can easily be used in the existing C.I. engine without making any modifications and sacrifice of power produced.
