Abstract

Soybean is processed for its oil, protein and lecithin At present India produces about 4 million tonnes of soybean and 85% of it is processed for oil Soymeal production is about 3 million tonnes and most of it is exported and at the same lime there is a shortage of protein m India. In order to meet the protein demands, soymeal must he utilized domestically. It will also help to delink the foreign dependence of Indian soybean industry This paper describes the present status of processing and utilization of soybean with special reference to soymeal and also suggests future strategies to create domestic market for soybean mean through its utilization in food, feed and pharmaceutical industry This requires need-based high quality R & D supported sponsored by Government and the soybean Industry.
