An institutional biogas plant of 85 m3 was installed at HPKV, Palampur in 1989 at cost of Rs. 2,10,254 including the cost of 10 manure pits. This plant is working successfully without any major technical problem except breakage of its central guide. This plant though underfed at present hut still biogas obtained from it is serving as a major source of fuel to meet the cooking needs of 70–80 students of the Veterinary hostel. To properly feed and to maintain the plant for its optimum utilisation, it is essential that a full time person is employed to feed the biogas plant and to regulate the gas collected in its gas holder. This plant has recovered its cost in less than 9 years. Apart from the benefit of rich manure obtained from it, the system is found to be cost effective even only on the basis of fuel obtained from it.
