Polyurethane rollers made by curing polyol and isocyanate in the proportion of 100:55 at 90°C for 3 hours were evaluated for performance in a rice mill of 2 t/h capacity. The wear of polyurethane rollers was less than the rubber rollers. One pair of polyurethane rollers dehusked 140 and 400 t of raw and parboiled paddy, respectively against 50 and 145 t, by the rubber rollers. There was no residual cyanide compound in the brown rice, husk and bran, when dehusked using polyurethane rollers. The head rice yield and effectiveness of shelling 100 per cent and 70 per cent by using polyurethane rollers were, respectively for parboiled paddy and 94 and 30 per cent, respectively, for the raw paddy.
