Utilization pattern of farm tractors in district Mohindergarh (Haryana)

Abstract

A study was conducted in Mohindergarh district of Haryana to as certain the utilization pattern of farm tractors. Three blocks of the district were selected and four villages were randomly chosen in each block. Twenty respondents were surveyed in each of the blocks selected for the study. Results of the survey revealed that tractors with 35–40 hp were very popular and were owned by 61.66% of farmers. The consideration of “timeliness in farm operations” dominated the farmers decision while purchasing the new tractors, as 78.33% of them assigned first priority to it. Tractor drawn Cultivator was found to be the most popular and important implement owned by 86.66% of tractor owners. Average annual use of the tractor was found to be 448.91 hours only; out of which it was used for 238.60 hours for custom hiring work and 210.31 hours for self work. Maximum use of the tractors was recorded in tillage operations (29.19%) followed by threshing operations 09.40%). Crop threshers provided the maximum custom hiring work (13.88%), whereas tillage operations engaged the tractors for a maximum period of 16.33% on self land.
