The construction and operational characteristics of a new, highly portable rainfall simulator are described. It involves breaking a water jet with the help of a strong air current into a simulated rainshower. Itissuitable for small-scale field studies of the erosion, in filtration, crusting and run off processes. Rainfall intensities ranging from 21 to 97 mm/h can be produced with a median drop diameter range of 1.1 to 2.6 mm. The simulator closely approximates the kinetic energy of natural rainfall within the range of these intensities.
