Abstract

Micro rice mill the intermittent version of rice mill between huller rice mill and modern rice mill was tested in year 1999 with different rotor speeds. The original design was obtained from International Rice Research Station (IRRI) Manilla, Phillippines. Ambemohar and Basmati paddy variety was used for testing (13.5% moisture content). It was observed that for Basmati paddy pulley size combination 5 x 6 inches (1728 rpm) gave better results in milling recovery (69.21%) and pulley size 5 x 7 inches (2050 rpm) gave better results in shelling efficiency (78.84%) and higher capacity (65.50 kg/hr) of mill. For Ambemohar variety pulley size combination and 5 x 8 inches (2300 rpm) gave better results of milling recovery (68.83%), shelling efficiency (98.79%) and minimum broken (11.00%). It was observed from the study that the long and slender variety needs a lower rpm and the sorter variety needs a higher rpm. The micro rice mill was found suitable for milling sorter variety of paddy like Ambemohar. The micro rice mill was also found suitable for custom milling in remote places due to its portability.
