Abstract

Fresh tomato of Avinash-2 variety at pink and breaker stage were transported for a distance of 100 km. Four types of packaging mediums namely, plastic crates, corrugated fiberboard boxes (CFB), wooden cartons and bamboo baskets were used. The cushioning materials used were grass, paper and straw. The overall minimum damage was recorded in T6(Breaker: CFB: Straw) i.e. 1.1% followed by T1 (Breaker: Plastic crate: Grass) 1.71% and T4 (Breaker: CFB: Grass) 1.8%. The overall meandamage for breaker stage was significantly less than pinkstage. All the three packaging mediums namely plastic crates, CFB and wooden boxes gave the damage, which did not differ significantly. Bamboo basket gave the highest damage.
