Abstract

A study on assessment of energy requirement for tomato cultivation was carried out at CIPHET, Abohar in southwestern Punjab. The region is characterized by very hot summer and very cold winter. The assessment of input energy for greenhouse cultivation of tomato has been compared with the open field condition. The study indicates that input energy per unit of tomato produce is 2.08 MJ/kg under open field cultivation and 5.38 MJ/kg under greenhouse cultivation. The higher energy requirement for greenhouse cultivation is mainly due to environmental control system (53 per cent) used in greenhouse. The assessment of input energy establishes the priorities for input energy optimization.
