Abstract

A 0.5 t capacity structure designed for the experiment was used for treatment of paddy straw bales with ammonia in a feed treatment structure to increase the crude protein of the straw. Bales, weighing about 14 kg at 8% moisture content were arranged in three layers in the structure. Careful planning was done for the application of safety engineering measures during the experiment with ammonia gas with regards to site selection, plant layout, storage and handling of chemicals, fire and accidents risk in view of the toxic, flammable and explosive nature of ammonia gas. Symbols recommended in ISO (R577–1967) were strictly followed. Adoption of these and such other precautionary measures is advocated in handling ammonia for treatment of agricultural produce.
