Flood plains develop naturally, contain nutrient-rich soil and reduce flood hazards in the downstream, Human interference by encroaching upon the natural flood plains has been causing serious damage to the stable ecosystem. Much of the enormous monsoon surplus waters of the north and East Indian Rivers mostly go waste to the sea after destroying agriculture and habitats in the transit. On the other hand, the south Indian rivers mostly have inadequate water. This had originated the idea of linking of north and south Indian rivers long ago. The concept is yet to take a firm footing due to several reasons. This paper discusses other complimentary activities to manage flood plains through a watershed approach, ensuring remunerative production from such areas.
