Abstract

The “Dangerous Machine (Regulation)Act (1983)” was expectedto result in reduced nwnber of accidents while operating agricultural machinery. One of the provisions was to make safe feeding systems compulsory on power threshers. However, thresher accidents continued to occurand many workers lost their lives/limbs. Agriculture in India is a State subject. Hence, formulation and implementation of any such act is the prerogative of the State Governments. Till 2006, the Act has been adopted by few states only. Some of the agricultural machinery manufacturers called it “cruel act” and demanded its repeal. The paperdeals with the state of accidents and possible reasons behind these. Attempt has been made to suggest modifications in the Act in orderto make it more acceptable and effective.
