Abstract

The Sikkim State of NE region is topographically, climatically and culturally distinct from the rest of the country. The region offers a tremendous scope for development of alternate source of energy which can become a milestone for the development of the region and falls under low productivity high potential zone. The alternate energy sources are mostly biomass based and available in unlimited amount in the hilly area. Biomass is natural product of solar energy. Energy stored into biomass is used for power generation by direct and in gaseous farm. These are chilauney tree, laber, katus, utis, mawa, panisas, malata, marich, Bamboo and others most commonly used as fuel wood obtained from forest. The potential of renewable alternative energy sources locally available in the village and status of supplementary and appropriate technologies developed have been surveyed in details that is useful for rural community for domestic agriculture, irrigation, cottage industries and rural electrification.
