Abstract

A study on assessment of energy requirement for vegetable cultivation was carried out at OUAT, Bhubaneswar in coastal Odisha. This region is characterized by moderate climate. The assessment of input energy for greenhouse cultivation of cauliflower, okra and cucumber has been compared with the open field condition. The study indicates that the input energy per unit of cauliflower, cucumber and okra produce was 5.89 MJ/kg, 1.97 MJ/kg and 14.95 MJ/kg in open field cultivation respectively and 9.63 MJ/kg, 2.45 MJ/kg and 16.67 MJ/kg in greenhouse cultivation respectively. The higher energy requirement for greenhouse cultivation is mainly due to the framed structure and the glazing materials used in the greenhouse. The assessment of input energy establishes the priorities for input energy optimization.
