Abstract

Studies and performance evaluation on power operated garlic stem and root cutter was undertaken to overcome the disadvantages of the traditional practices i.e. manually removing of stems and roots from the garlic bulb. This is a very difficult task, time consuming, unsafe and laborious process which increases the production cost of garlic. The power operated garlic stem and root cutter consists of main frame, feeding unit with two feeder box, clamping unit, cutting unit, power transmission unit and garlic bulb dropping chute. Average output capacity only for one side of the feeder box, cutting efficiency, length of cut stem and length of cut root were found as 32.52 kg/h, 99.08 per cent, 23.25 mm and 2.28 mm respectively. The cost of operation was found to be Rs 48.5 per hour.
