Abstract

The geometric properties along with related physical properties of agricultural crops are very important to characterize and describe its quality. The experiments were conducted to classify the kinnow fruits in different grades according to size both manually and using image processing technique. A digital camera was used to acquire images of ten fruits of each grade of kinnow. The kinnow were placed in two different orientations (longitudinal and lateral) and image processing technique was used to process and quantify the images. The major axis length, minor axis length, thickness, area, eccentricity, equivalent diameter and roundness ratio for each grade of kinnow were extracted using image processing technique. The physical characteristics like length, width, thickness, mass; arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, surface area and sphericity of each grade of kinnow were also measured manually. The arithmetic and geometric mean diameter of kinnow were observed to vary from 58.8mm to 80.9mm and 58.6mm to 79.81mm respectively. The sphericity of kinnow varied from 0.89 to 0.98 with standard deviation from 0.01 for smallest to largest grades which show that all the fruits were almost spherical in shape. The eccentricity of kinnow fruits was found to be between 0.36 to 0.71 with mean value and standard deviation as 0.54 and 0.09. The roundness ratio was also calculated to be 1.23 with values ranging from 1.09 to 1.47. The equivalent diameter was measured to be 1481.79 pixels with minimum value as 1139.1 pixels and maximum value as 1903.7 pixels. A linear relationship was seen between projected area and mass of kinnow fruit with R2 as 0.981.
