A manually operated check row planter was designed for dry seeding of rice seed, which was capable of planting seed in two rows, at a spacing of 25 x 25cm. The engineering properties of rice seed relevant to design of planter were determined. The average length, width, thickness, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, unit weight and bulk density was found to be 9.47 mm, 2.43 mm, 2.14 mm, 3.61 mm, 0.37, 0.0276 g, 650.84 kg m−3, respectively. The overall length, width and height of the machine was 1405, 533 and 520 mm, respectively. was 0.023 ha h−1−1. The −1, at average speed of 0.97 km h−1.
