Allelopathic efficacy of algal weed Pithophora oedogonia (Mont.) wittrock on growth of blue green alga Oscillatoria.

The allaelopathic effect of methanolic extract of algal weed Pithophora oedogonia was evaluated on growth and development of blue green alga Oscillatoria. In laboratory condition weed extract promoted growth indicating chlorophyll ‘a’ content increase as the extract concentration (5 to 50%) applied in the liquid culture medium. The allelopathy may thus exploit as the possible mechanism to trigger the biochemical and enzymetic activity in BGA leading to the enhanced growth and biomass production.
