Mushroom cultivation through white button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) for economic empowerment under ICAR-Farmer first project in Uttarakhand

Abstract

Global market is witnessing the increasing trend for mushroom as a commodity due to shift in consumer’s choice from animal protein to mushroom. Mushroom is a cash crop that is capable to harness quit a good amount of harvest from limited organic and financial resources. Past researches revealed that farmers in rural areas are not aware about the process of mushroom farming, its importance and profits. Government has initiated various projects, plans to aware the mushroom farmers about the cultivation process. ICAR-Farmer FIRST Project is also one of the important initiative for the development of rural communities. Training programme on “Mushroom cultivation and its value added products” was organized by Depar tment of Agr i cul tural Communication in joint collaboration with Mushroom Research and Training Centre, G.B.P.U.A.&T, Pantnagar in adopted village Dograin district Nanital, Uttarakhand. White button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) was distributed among the selected beneficiaries. Under this training programme total 70 mushroom bags were distributed among the farmers. The results revealed that favourable change in level of awareness and perception towards mushroom cultivation was observed among the beneficiaries at the end of the intervention.
