Abstract

Metabolites are being characterized into primary & secondary metabolites. Primary metabolites form the essential component of growth and metabolism such as sugar, amino acids, lipids, nucleic acids & proteins etc. Secondary metabolites on the other hand, were considered non-essential; however they do occur in plant's lifecycle. A wide variety of secondary metabolites are beneficial, and others can be toxic for the mankind. In order to counter biotic & abiotic stresses, plants have developed a defence mechanism based upon secondary metabolites. Confluence factors such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, nematodes, mites, insects, can influence the productivity. By the virtue of these secondary metabolites, these factors could be successfully repelled and serve as phenomenon of plant rescue against mammals and other herbivorous animals. Terpenoids, phenols, alkaloids flavanoids are rich in nitrogen & sulphur can provide resistance against various pathogens. This article discusses the paradigm of plant protection against the environmental stress based on the secondary metabolites. It acts as a shield through which plant can rescue them & sustain their life cycle for prolonged periods.
