Germination in sugarcane is influenced by a group of factors comprising the soil, the environment and the plant itself. Under North Indian conditions the germination varies from about 25 to 55 percent. The thick and healthy canes containing adequate water and food reserves are considered suitable for seed purposes. Well manured and irrigated field, 2–3 budded setts, soil moisture (8–15%), temperature 16–300C, buds, age of cane, etc are associated with sugarcane germination. The present review has discussed these factors in brief. The morphological and biochemical changes are mainly controlled by internal and external factors. The internal comprises the health, age, water content, etc where as external factors include the soil conditions, environment, aeration, compactness, temperature, humidity, etc.
