Abstract

Government of India has identified floriculture as a sunrise industry and accorded it 100%export-oriented status. Owing to steady increase in demand of flowers, floriculture has becomeone of the important commercial trades in Agriculture. Hence, commercial floriculture hasemerged as hi-tech activity that taking place under controlled climatic conditions insidegreenhouse. Floriculture in India is being viewed as a high growth Industry. Commercialfloriculture is becoming important from the export angle. The liberalization of industrial andtrade policies paved the way for development of export-oriented production of cut flowers. Thenew seed policy had already made it feasible to import planting material of internationalvarieties. It has been found that commercial floriculture is a potential money-spinner, andeconomical viable agri-business. Indian floriculture industry has been shifting from traditionalflowers to cut flowers for export purposes. Traditional flowers are grown in open field conditionand have short shelf life which poses many constraints to their exports to distant markets.Therefore, the liberalized economy has given an impetus to the Indian entrepreneurs forestablishing export-oriented floriculture units under controlled climatic conditions
