Abstract

Nonlinear growth models are widely used in the study for growth pattern of various entities. For fitting the data to these models, we require initial values for different iterative proceduresto get the final estimate of coefficients. These are usually taken up by visualizing the data, results from earlier experiments or a close guess. In this study, an attempt has been made tofigure out the initial values of coefficients of nonlinear growth models and computation ofcompound growth rates for Logistic, Gompertz and Monomolecular model. So, an empiricalstudy was conducted on area and production of Cabbage and Cauliflower in Haryana from1992-93 to 2018-19 to get initial values and computation of growth rates by using non-lineargrowth models. The initial values for different models were obtained using method of threeselected points, method of partial sums and Yule’s method in RStudio software. TheSPSSsoftware was used to get the final parameters of above models which usesLevenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Residual analysis and goodness of fit tests was used to decidethe best fitted model.Cabbage and Cauliflower area was best fitted with Gompertz model withaverage CAGR of 8.59% and its production was fitted with Monomolecular model with CAGR of9.90%.
