Abstract

Globally, food security is an emerging issue due to the increase of population and shrinkageof agricultural land. Pleurotus eryngii mushroom cultivation is one of the most efficient and economically viable toolsfor agro and industrial wastes management.Availability of agro-wastes and labours in Asian countries are conducive factors for this conversion of wastesinto quality protein food. P. eryngii is a saprophytic fungal species that can be grown on differentagro-wastes having lingocellulosic organic matter. It has also been considered as an importantlow energy food with high nutritional value, low fat, long shelf life and also used as medicine fordifferent diseases of human beings. In this article, we have reviewed the possible aspects ofsustainability of agro-wastes management by King Oyster Mushroom cultivation. Consideringthe present scenario of P. eryngii cultivation, an advance technology for successful commercialcultivation of King Oyster Mushroom is needed for achieving the higher productivity withmarket acceptability.
