An on farm trial was conducted during the 2008–09 to 2010–11 in Baghpat district of western Uttar Pradesh to assess the economic viability of sugarcane based cropping system. The experiment comprising three treatments with four replications. Farmers practice sugarcane-wheat sequence considered as one of the treatment i.e. treatment one. Intercropping of mustard with sugarcane and onion with sugarcane were other treatments compared with farmer's practices i.e. T-2 and T-3 respectively. The result revealed that net return of onion with Sugarcane was much higher as compare to farmers practice (Rs. 101466.00 per hectare extra monitory gain). It was also noticed that infestation of borers was very low in sugarcane with onion in comparison to treatment one and two. Reasult have clearly indicated that intercropping of onion with autumn planting sugarcane is economically viable and physible option to replace the existing cropping system without left sugarcane which is highly suitable cash crop in agro-marketing condition of western Uttar Pradesh and crop-animal husbandry based farming system which is predominant and success farming system considered by majority of the farmers.
