An Appraisal of Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) Assisted Under NRHM Programme in Tamil Nadu State-South India: Some Preliminary Observations

Abstract

This study is based on the preliminary results obtained from the ongoing evaluation study on Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSY) in Tamil Nadu state of South India. Towards achieving the objectives of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Janani Suraksha Yojana was launched in April 2005 to promote institutional and safe baby deliveries among the poor population, through provisions for cash incentives, free referral, free transport, and free escort services. This scheme also intends to reduce the infant and maternal mortality rate in the country. A cross-sectional community based survey is being done in the selected districts of Tamil Nadu state. As a first phase of the study, socio-demographic factors, antenatal services availed, and stake holder's opinions have been studied. For the time being, this study has found that there is a strong requirement to create more awareness among rural population about the utilization of this JSY scheme. Stake holders should also take proper geographical specific action plans for the rapid implementation process. Also they must target the remote areas, SC/ST population, and special measures are required to encourage more antenatal visits which is a vital prerequisite to get better impact out of JSY scheme.
