Trends in Curriculum Change: Competency-Based Medical Education

Abstract

Competency-based education (CBE) has emerged in the health professions to address criticisms of contemporary approaches in training. Competency-based medical education (CBME) is quickly moving from theory to reality. The intended output of a competency-based programme is a health professional, who can practice medicine at a defined level of proficiency, in accord with local conditions, to meet local needs. The introduction of a restructured curriculum and training program with emphasis on early clinical exposure, integration of basic and clinical sciences, clinical competence and skills and new teaching learning methodologies will lead to a new generation of medical graduates of global standards.
