Assessment of Dyslipidaemia and its Role in Hypertensive Pregnant Patients in Western UP (India)
Abstract
Background & Objectives: Dyslipidaemia in essential hypertension is well-documented and its association with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases is well-studied. The most important feature in toxaemia of pregnancy is hypertension. Therefore, simple measurement of serum lipid profile may be a good predictor of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Methods: This was a single-centre prospective observational study where serum lipid profile was investigated in 50 patients (25 normotensive and 25 hypertensive pregnant patients) in the third trimester of pregnancy. Results: The serum triglyceride and VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) levels were significantly (p<0.05) elevated in PIH patients whereas total cholesterol, HDL and LDL levels did not show any significant alteration. Conclusion: Dyslipidaemia can be used as an early diagnostic marker of hypertensive pregnant patients.
