Inter-departmental communication plays a pivotal role in the effective functioning of an organization. The study conducted on 40 employees working in Idea Cellular Limited, Shimla, HP revealed that a majority of them had fair inter-departmental communication skills. Respondents’ age, designation and service experience were positively and significantly correlated with their communication skills whereas gender, marital status and educational status were not. Lack of timely information, ambiguous instructions from the superiors, time bound eleventh hour communication, lack of cooperation from the superiors/subordinates in accomplishing the task and selective perception of the superiors were the main problems in inter-departmental communication. Direct, simple and time saving communication, psychological training to break the ego-centric tendency of the employees, proper feedback mechanism, clear distinction between duties and responsibilities and encouraging frequent interaction among the employees were some of the major suggestions for further improving interdepartmental communication among the employees.
