Abstract

The study conducted on 75 members of a randomly selected sample of 10 self-help groups (SHGs) registered in Jogindra Central Cooperative Bank, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh revealed that a majority of them had properly utilized the loan and returned the same in time. All the members repaid the loan in installments and found the rate of interest as genuine. Defaulting members, fluctuating bank policies, lack of cooperation and groupism among the members etc were some of the main problems faced by them. Making members familiar with various financial institutions, establishing single window information and counseling centers, encouraging federation of SHGs at cluster level besides engaging them in income generating activities through appropriate training modules were some of the main suggestions for further promoting/improving the functioning of self-help groups in the state.
