Abstract

Seeds of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) var. U.P 2338 and HUW 234 were treated with different concentrations of leaf, stem and root leachates of 6dominant weeds (Amaranthus viridis, Echinochloa crusgalli, Eclipta alba, Parthenium hysterophorus, Pluchea lanceolata, Polygonum plebejum) to assess their allelopathic effects on seed germination. Leachates of all weed species inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of the test cultivars at different concentrations (5,10,15 and 20%). Stem leachates of Pluchea lanceolata and root leachates of Eclipta alba and Polygonum plebejum slightly stimulated the germination, but mostly root and stem leachates of all other weed species did not inhibit the germination and seedling growth of both the test cultivars of wheat. An increase in concentration of leaf leachates was invariably associated with further decrease in germination of test cultivars irrespective of weed species.
