The allelopathic effects of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) water extracts (SWE) on the phenology and quality parameters of rice (Oryza sativa) were determined. It was observed that the SWE at 25, 50 and 75% concentrations showed inhibitory effects on seed germination, while, the effect of 100% was found stimulatory in comparison with control. All the phenological parameters gave significant results in comparison with the control. The chemical composition of rice seedlings showed a remarkable change in protein, phosphorous, starch. potassium and ash contents in all treatments. These influences on the quality parameters were attributable to the presence of allelochemicals and confirm the allelopathic effects of sorghum on rice.
