Indoor Petri dish bioassay was adopted to study aIlelopathic actions of Artemisia annua. The results showed that the water extract solution of A. annua remarkably inhibited the growth of wheat seedlings and this inhibition intensified as the concentration of the extract solution increased. The extract solution inhibited the growth of wheat roots more strongly than the growth of wheat leaves. The extract solution of A. annua negatively affected the regular karyokinesis taking place in the meristem tissue of wheat root tips and the number of dividing cells in the meristem tissue of wheat root tips decreased as the concentration of the extraction solution increased. Some physiological and biochemical indices of treated wheat indicated that the extract solution of A. annua by water reduced the vigour of treated wheat roots, and remarkably increased the content of soluble protein of treated wheat roots; it increased the content of nucleic acid in wheat roots and reduced the content of nucleic acid in wheat seedlings; it also reduced the content of chlorophyll relatively remarkably.
