A study of allelopathic inhibition of seed germination and seedling growth of Brassica chinensis by extracts of Trifolium repens and Festuca arundinacea was conducted. Seed germination and seedling growth of B. chinensis were inhibited by application of the extracts, with T. repens having more effect on seedling growth than F. arundinacea. A preliminary analysis of allelochemicals showed that there were large amounts of phenolic compounds in the extracts of T. repens and F. arundinacea. Cell growth and function of cell membrane of B. chinensis seedlings were both affected by allelochemicals.
