This chapter examines research efforts on allelopathy from the 1970s to the current time. Two approaches are detailed: the direct use of modified allelochemicals such as hydroxamic acids in the formulation of new herbicides, and the genetic improvement of cultivated plants (such as rice) which naturally synthesise allelopathic substances. AIIelopathic potential appears to be polygenic and not linked to genes of agricultural interest, thus hybridizing cultivars with good yields with those with good aIlelopathic potential is an important area of current research. Further research is also needed on the biodegradability of aIlelochemicals compared to synthetic herbicides.
