A study of family environment and expressed emotions amongst a group of schizophrenics and normals

Abstract

The family environment is the first and foremost enduring context for growth and development of children. The schizophrenic patients being considered as having poor relationship with every one including the family members, an attempt was made in this study to find out the typical family environment that exists in their life. Also every family has its own way of facilitating their members to express their emotions, and this study tries to find out if the schizophrenic patients in any way differed in their Expressed Emotions as compared to normals. A total 50 patients suffering from schizophrenia duly diagnosed by the dealing psychiatrist and a control group of 50 matched for age and sex constituted the sample. The tools used included the FES (Family Environment Scale) and the EES (Expressed Emotions Scale). The analysis of the data revealed that there was a significant difference in the Family environment between the schizophrenics and normals. So also the two groups differed significantly in terms of the Expressed Emotions. In both the variables, family environment and expressed emotion, there was no significant difference between males and females.
