Assessment of emotional intelligence among adolescents: influence of area and gender

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the Emotional Intelligence among male and female adolescents studying in urban, rural and tribal areas. The sample consisted of 600 adolescents (300 boys and 300 girls) of age 16 and above years drawn randomly from different Government High Schools of Bangalore, Chitradurga and Tumkur districts. For this study, Emotional Intelligence Inventory developed by Mangal & Shubhramangal (2011) was employed. Analysis of results was done by using Two-Way ANOVA. Results revealed that in all the 4 domains of emotional intelligence - Intrapersonal Awareness, Interpersonal awareness, Intra personal management and inter personal Management, in total EI, adolescents from rural area had higher EI, followed by adolescents from tribal area and adolescents from urban area had lesser EI. Female adolescents were found to have higher EI in Awareness, Interpersonal awareness, Intra personal management and inter personal Management, in total EI than male adolescents. Suggestions to improve EI among adolescents have been delineated.
