Health issues among the slum dwellers of Mangalore City

Abstract

This paper analyzes the state of health and the services access on health among the urban slums in selected few slums of Mangalore city of Karnataka state. Data has been analyzed on the bases of primary survey conducted among 100 households, from ten slums of Mangalore city. Results shows that lack of government facilities and services, a very high preference for private health facilities, high expenses especially in private but also in public facilities, and a perception that private facilities are offering high quality services as important concerns. The analysis of the determinants are of acute illness indicates the insufficiency of basic amenities like housing conditions, sanitation, garbage disposal and potable water, latrine system etc.
