Fostering national unity through curriculum

Abstract

This paper explores the need to restructure syllabi towards making national unity and solidarity. India is a multi cultural country and the historical references to unity lies in its legacy. Numerous types of religious beliefs, caste practices, traditional thoughts are living in India coherently. But of late, Indian society is undergoing several divisive tendencies specially among the youth. The rise in terrorism related activities, cyber crime related activities, animosity, mutual disrespect, hostility, ill-will etc are often seen on the increase. The need to inculcate harmonious living among plural cultured society is not only multifaceted but it is challenging as well. There are several debates on making National solidarity and education entwined. The national integrity and solidarity can be achieved through inculcation of national ideals in curriculum by designing right educational inputs. The awareness about National ideals is given to them through perfectly designed curriculum at all levels of education will support their whole personality development and individuals can act as torch bearers for future generations.
